A film to stop time, "apocalypto" tells the story of a group of people who survive in brutal conditions for nearly 200 years after an unknown event has destroyed their world. This film is based on the novel, "Apocalypto", by British novelist and anthropologist, M.K. (Micheal) Crichton (Malcolm), which was written in 1990. "Apocalypto" is set at the end of the last Ice Age when several tribes live in Central America. The film starts with Jaguar Paw, played by Rudy Youngblood(Roby) telling us about food scarcity and how his village no longer has enough to feed everyone. Eventually, they hit rock bottom and must leave their village to find food. They come upon a fallen tree and spend the night there with no provisions. The next day they move on, but run into many difficulties with their limited supplies. They meet a land called San Lorenzo and find that the people who live there have plenty to eat and that Jaguar Paw's father is where they can obtain more food for his tribe. But this is only the beginning of the journey as we learn about their culture, struggles, and hardships along the way with them all trying to survive and defeat "Accused" (Tarantula) who has been making it impossible for villages to be able ease into their new crops. The film is directed, produced, and written by Mel Gibson, who also plays the main character Jaguar Paw. Much of the film is cast with Native Americans. The language spoken in the film is Maya language. Gibson cast the O'odham people in the movie to play their own characters, although they are not Maya; because many O'odham live in central Mexico; where much of "Apocalypto" takes place. "Apocalypto" was filmed in Mexico (Chiapas and Yucatán) with a largely Native American cast led by Rudy Youngblood (Roma). The scenes that were filmed in Yucatán were filmed at Muyil Beach and Oxkintok site. This is the first Mel Gibson directed film without a score by frequent collaborator, Hans Zimmer. Instead Danny Elfman was hired to score the film. The soundtrack for this movie is composed by Leoni Bolagio and Mel Gibson's brother, Martin Gibson. The soundtrack was released on December 5, 2006 to be available for purchase for digital download at Amazon.com and iTunes. Also, this is the first Mel Gibson movie not to feature the DTS mix, but instead is Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound on all channels. An alternate English dub was created for the film by Nelvana Limited who acquired the distribution rights internationally. The film opened at #8 at box office on its opening weekend behind "The Godfathers", "Hairspray", and "Seabiscuit". With a budget of $102 million, it earned $25 million in North America and $48m overseas for a worldwide total of $71m. The film closed out with $83 million worldwide. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a score of 38%. 8eeb4e9f32 26
